Coffee pod is freshly roasted coffee, ground perfect, tampered to the right pressure then encapsulated in between two paper filter & sealed. Pods are made to a standard size of 44mm with 6.8-7.0g of coffee per pod. Phillips Senseo coffee machines use 62mm coffee pods with 9.0g of coffee. Many coffee machine companies now offer adaptors with their machines to accept pods. The original pod was designed by illy caffe over 20 years ago. In 1996, illy opens its idea to the coffee industry to bring a standard pod size to the market.

Common brand names of coffe pod include Illy, Lavazza, Segafredo, Senseo, Wolfgang Puck, Melitta, Baronet, Caffe Roma, Aloha Island, & Tassimo T-Disc.


Coffee capsule differs from coffee pod in that the coffee is packed in a plastic or aluminium package instead of paper filter. Coffee capsule is usually designed for use with a single brand or system, therefore, not interchangeable with other systems. 

Popular capsule systems are Nestle's Dolce Gusto, Nestle's Nespresso, and Keurig's K-Cup.
